PUTRAJAYA: Employers who have foreign domestic workers stranded abroad can apply to enter the country, but the decision to allow them to enter will be left to the discretion of immigration authorities, says Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The Chief Minister said that while the entry restriction for foreigners, including maids, is still in effect, there may be special cases that the department may consider.

“The requests will be according to the case to justify the permission of the return of the domestic employees who are currently stranded in their country of origin.

“Perhaps in the case of a working couple who are caring for elderly and sick parents, or caring for a disabled child with the help of a maid, the authorities can give approval,” he said on Thursday (November 12).

The Immigration Department had said that employers who have foreign domestic workers stranded abroad but who possess temporary work visit passes can apply for permission to enter the country.

Its CEO, Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud, said that all appeals can be made through the MyTravelPass system and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

He said restricting entry to foreigners, including domestic servants from Indonesia and the Philippines, was a measure to stop the spread of Covid-19, although entry may be considered for cases related to health and other critical matters.

Khairul said that employers must comply with all the entry conditions and also the Covid-19 prevention steps, including the examination and the 14-day quarantine, in addition to bearing the cost of the quarantine.
