The best of both worlds with an Irish medical degree

In light of the current Covid-19 situation around the world, it is not surprising that health is a major concern for many countries.

The disease’s ability to mutate and spread indiscriminately has been closely monitored by health officials and specialists everywhere, leading to a kind of cat and mouse game in which people and governments strive to be one step ahead of infection.

It is also not surprising that healthcare stands out as the most important of all professions, keeping medicine the top career most students aspire to pursue.

As a branch campus of leading Irish medical schools, the RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus (RUMC) has provided world-class medical education to students from all over the world.

Irish Foreign University Branch Campus in Penang, Malaysia

In 1996, collaboration between the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and University College Dublin (UCD), two leading universities in Ireland, led to the establishment of Penang Medical College (PMC), which is now known as RCSI and Campus from UCD Malaysia (RUMC).

It has been renamed RUMC after being granted Campus status of the Foreign University Branch (FUBC) in 2018.

Wholly owned by RCSI and UCD, RUMC is also the first accredited private medical institution in Malaysia to fulfill the need for a medical school in the region at the time. The university is still now the only Irish institution in the region.

The high quality Irish medical education provided by RUMC is backed by centuries of experience and expertise in delivering medical knowledge at RCSI and UCD.

Established in 1784, RCSI is a unique academic and research institution that focuses solely on health care. It is ranked in the top 2% according to the Times Higher World University Rankings. RCSI is Ireland’s largest medical school with campuses in Dublin, Bahrain and the RUMC program in Malaysia.

The University College Dublin (UCD) Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1855 and is known as one of Ireland’s leading medical schools. It offers medical education taught by specialized staff in an extensive network of academic and clinical locations.

Invaluable Irish experience

At RUMC, it’s about nurturing future healthcare professionals with the best of experience from both worlds, in Ireland and Malaysia.

RUMC students are endowed with a distinct Irish experience during their preclinical years in Dublin, Ireland, either at RCSI or UCD, for the first two and a half years.

Along with exceptional preclinical training from acclaimed academics from around the world, students also receive early exposure to clinical skills and patient-centered learning.

This improves their communication skills and instills in them the necessary social skills, especially when dealing with patients later on.

Students continue their Clinical Years in Penang, Malaysia for the remaining two and a half years at RUMC and its hospital teaching centers. Thanks to hands-on preclinical training in Dublin, students return more prepared to practice during rotations in the hospital and deal with their patients.

In addition, they also receive unrivaled access to clinical training in hospitals. RUMC medical students are the only group that uses Penang General Hospital and Seberang Jaya Hospital as part of their basic medical program. This allows RUMC to have the privilege of maintaining an exceptionally high ratio of patient beds to number of students.

Upon graduation, students are awarded the internationally recognized Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Obstetrics (MB BCh BAO) degrees from the National University of Ireland (NUI), making them competent and clinically distinguished graduates .

Solid foundation in basic science

Probably the best way for students to begin their foray into medical and health studies is to enroll in a basic course.

RUMC’s Foundation in Science (FIS) provides an early introduction to its medical degree program and provides the opportunity for students to interact with their elders and physicians.

Students with O-Level and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) qualifications from Malaysia can apply for the FIS program which starts every May.

FIS students have access to exclusive accommodation at an affordable price, with transportation to and from campus.

Once the FIS qualification is earned, students can take the direct route to RUMC’s five-year medical degree program, provided they meet the entry requirements.

FIS graduates who achieve a CGPA score of 3.5 to 4.0 can directly continue their five-year medical degree program at RUMC.

Students who earned a CGPA score of 3.0 to 3.49, however, can move on to a one-year Pre-Med Foundation program at RUMC prior to earning their medical degree.

Also open to students with A-Level or Malaysia Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) qualifications, the Pre-Med program at RUMC provides a solid foundation in biomedical sciences and is delivered as a series of independent and integrated modules with a modularized assessment.

An immersive learning experience

The Medicine journey at RUMC goes beyond an ordinary pursuit of medical education.

It provides a comprehensive learning pathway that allows students to be fully immersed with Irish and international students throughout their duration of study at RCSI or UCD.

The unique course structure of the RUMC Medicine program promotes a cost-effective option for students to study for an Irish medical degree while gaining an enriching experience in Ireland.

Once they have completed the entirety, they will receive their degrees from the National University of Ireland, which is similar to those who complete their five-year Medicine program in Ireland.

The RUMC medical degree is recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and the Irish Medical Council (IMC) as high performing graduate physicians.

Students are open to opportunities to practice Medicine not only in the Malaysian healthcare environment, but also abroad such as the US, UK, and Ireland.

Malaysian students who are qualified but may require financial assistance can seek out RUMC scholarships or funding options such as PTPTN, EPF, and more.
