KUALA LUMPUR: The appointment of three deputy chief ministers in Sabah does not contravene any provision of the state Constitution, said associate professor of constitutional law Dr. Shamrahayu Abd Aziz.

She said that by convention, it is up to the Chief Minister to decide whether a deputy or deputies are required.

Shamrahayu said the state Constitution also does not mention any specific number for the post of deputy prime minister.

“The Constitution only mentions the appointment of the Chief Minister. So, the ministers or members of the state executive council, if according to the party’s practice, are decided by the Chief Minister, ”he said on the ‘Ruang Bicara’ program broadcast by Bernama TV tonight that discussed the topic ‘The new government of Sabah 2020 ‘. .

Shamrahayu was responding to questions from the show’s host, Sherkawi Jirim, on whether the appointment of three deputy chief ministers was in accordance with the Sabah Constitution.

Shamrahayu said that when Yang Dipertua Negeri appoints other ministers besides the Chief Minister, he takes the advice of the Chief Minister.

“Perhaps, in the legal aspects, there is nothing wrong, perhaps the political dynamics is such that it is more important in this context to appoint some deputy prime ministers who represent the political parties.

“If we are going to look at the current federal government, we don’t have a deputy prime minister, but the prime minister has appointed a senior minister from various political parties. I think the same applies and does not contradict any provision of the Sabah Constitution, ”he said.

Sabah Perikatan Nasional President and Sulaman Assemblyman Datuk Hajiji Noor was sworn in as Chief Minister before Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin in Istana Negeri here today.

Also sworn in as Deputy Prime Ministers were Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) President and Lamag Assemblyman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, STAR Datuk President Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan (Tambunan Assemblyman) and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Vice President Datuk Dr. Joachim Gunsalam (Kundasang Assemblyman). – Bernama
