KUALA LUMPUR: The government is not about to “celebrate” the approval of the 2021 Budget at the political stage, as it knows it has to face another hurdle before it is “really approved”, says Datuk Seri Azmin Ali (photo). The Chief Minister said that Budget 2021 is not something to be taken lightly, which is why the government took the time to respond and address the issues raised by MPs in Parliament.

“This is not cause for celebration. The only ones that politicize it is the opposition, ”he said when he met yesterday at a hotel here where Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia held its supreme council meeting.

Azmin said this in response to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s warning to the government not to celebrate his victory by passing the 2021 Budget on the political stage for now.

On Thursday, Anwar warned that the Budget could still be locked when it enters the committee stage starting next Monday, following the approval of the 2021 Budget at the policy stage in Parliament via a voice vote.

Azmin said the RM322.5bil budget was intended to help people whose lives were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as to aid the country’s economic recovery.

He said the government had also consulted the opposition for their views on the budget before it was presented.

“Pakatan Harapan has never taken such an open approach,” he said.

Azmin also said that Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz also took time to discuss what could be done now, and what could be done in the future, when drafting the budget.

“This is not a one-size-fits-all budget, so it had to be dynamic and we needed an inclusive approach to respond to current needs,” he said, adding that the government will continue its approach to respond to any issues that arise to get Approved. the 2021 budget.
