BANGKOK, March 24 (Bernama): Thailand wants its famous spicy Tom Yam Kung shrimp soup to be listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as part of cultural heritage immaterial of the country.
The cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-Cha today agreed that Thailand’s national dish, Tom Yam Kung, is the candidate for this year’s UNESCO Cultural Heritage list of 2021.
Tom Yam Kung is a spicy soup made by mixing various fresh ingredients, such as lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, lime juice, chili peppers, fish sauce, and shrimp.
The word ‘Tom Yam’ refers to the cooking process where ‘Tom’ means to boil and ‘Yam’ means to mix, while ‘Kung’ refers to prawns or shrimp.
Culture Minister Itthiphol Kunplome said Tom Yam Kung reflects the simple lifestyle of farming communities living along the fertile rivers and canals of central Thailand.
“Proposing Tom Yam Kung as a World Heritage Site will be a proud moment for Thais, while at the same time raising awareness among foreigners about the abundant variety of Thai food.
“Its inclusion in the UNESCO list will create opportunities for the Thai food business, employment and income opportunities for food producers, including shrimp and herb producers, as well as exporters, Thai restaurant operators at the level local and abroad, “he was quoted as saying by The Nation.
