BANGKOK: New cases of Covid-19 (coronavirus) from Thailand increased to just 18 on Monday (May 4), after dropping to single digits over the past week, but the country reported no new deaths.

Monday’s report brought the total number of cases to 2,987 since the new virus was detected in Thailand in January, with a total of 54 deaths.

The new cases were migrants entering Thailand through an immigration checkpoint in the southern Songkhla province, which shares a border with Malaysia, said Taweesin Wisanuyothin, spokesman for the government’s Covid-19 Situation Management Center.

They were all quarantined at an immigration detention center, along with 42 cases previously found on April 25, Taweesin said.

On Monday, Thailand began to loosen restrictions on movements and meetings, allowing restaurants, beauty salons and open-air markets to resume business, provided that social distance is maintained and owners carry out temperature controls.

Runners and cyclists gathered in Bangkok’s public parks to exercise and enjoy the sun and open space after more than a month of closure.

Authorities also resumed the sale of alcohol after a three-week ban, although they warned that the restrictions could be reinstated if this led to an increase in large gatherings. – Reuters
