BANGKOK (The Nation / ANN): An expert virologist from Chulalongkorn University has said that the mutant coronavirus in the UK has already been found in Thailand.
Dr. Yong Poovorawan said in a Facebook post on Sunday (January 3) that the Center for Specialization in Clinical Virology at the Chulalongkorn University School of Medicine had decoded the virus strain and found a mutant of the Kingdom’s coronavirus. Kingdom, also known as B.1.1 .7 mutant.
The virus was obtained from a British family of four from Kent, England. They were isolated in an alternative state quarantine hotel under the care of a private hospital, to ensure that the virus did not spread.
Genetic decoding shows that this mutated British virus, which is viewed with suspicion around the world and has caused the suspension of flights from the UK, has two gene transcripts: mutations in the receptor-binding domain of human cells (N501Y) , mutation in peak protein (P681H), deletion of peak 69-70 and other positions.
This strain facilitated transmission and spread rapidly in this family, infecting all four people.
However, this strain will not aggravate the disease in Thailand and is not related to the efficacy of the vaccine.
The four British patients are under close surveillance under controlled conditions to prevent the virus from spreading. The patients are still in a negative pressure room to make sure they come out without infection.
He added that Thais must rest assured that the virus has not yet had a chance to spread in the country. – The Nation / Asia News Network
