BANGKOK (Bernama): Thai police arrested a Malaysian and four other suspects for allegedly kidnapping a Chinese businessman in Bangkok.

The 49-year-old man and four Thai people were arrested at a resort in Suphan Buri province about 100 km from Bangkok on Tuesday (December 8).

In a statement, the head of the Metropolitan Police Office, Pol, Lt-Gen Pakapong Pongpetra, said that a 43-year-old Chinese businessman was kidnapped on Sukhumvit Soi 39 in Bangkok around 4.30pm (local time) on Saturday.

Based on the initial investigation, he said the Malaysian contacted the friend of the victim and demanded a ransom of 3 million yuan (RM 1.86 million).

“The investigation began after a friend of the victim notified the Subdivision for the Protection of Children and Women. According to images from a closed circuit television (CCTV) recording, the police located the suspects in a tourist center in Suphan Buri province on Tuesday.

“The police released the businessman and arrested the five suspects,” he said.

Pakapong said the initial investigation found that business disputes between the victim and one of the suspects could have led to the kidnapping.

He added that at least seven suspects were involved in the kidnapping and two, who are believed to be Myanmar citizens, are still at large. – Bernama
