SINGAPORE: Tesla Inc published new job postings for Singapore-based positions, indicating that Elon Musk’s electric vehicle maker is preparing to establish itself in the wealthy city-state it has so far avoided.
The automaker is seeking senior developers in Singapore, according to job postings on LinkedIn, which did not reveal how many people are being sought.
In July, Tesla began advertising for positions as a store leader and sales consultant in the city.
A Tesla representative in Beijing declined to comment.
Musk has previously criticized Singapore for not supporting electric vehicles, and Tesla has no showrooms in the city whose premium car market is dominated by brands like BMW AG and Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz.
The California-based company has rapidly expanded into other major metropolitan markets in Asia and the Pacific, including Hong Kong, Sydney, Tokyo, and Taipei.
Singapore said this year that it plans to phase out fossil-fuel vehicles by 2040, and plans to add incentives to encourage consumers to buy electric cars.
The island state has been relatively slow to adopt electric vehicles and Musk said on Twitter in January 2019 that the government was not welcoming.
Tesla plans to ship cars made at its new Shanghai factory to other Asian countries, including Singapore, people familiar with the matter said this month.
Shipments could start as early as the end of this year or early 2021, according to the people.
