PUTRAJAYA: A telecommunications company worker has been arrested in connection with bribes worth millions of ringgit linked to a syndicate of SMS scams.

The 49-year-old will be in pre-trial detention for five days until November 15 in connection with the case, which previously saw the pre-trial detention of three other people.

The remand order was issued by Judge Nur Aisyah Mohd Yusof after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) submitted a request to the court on Wednesday (November 11).

The suspect was arrested on Tuesday (November 10) around 9 p.m. at MACC headquarters.

Sources said the suspect was believed to have accepted RM300,000 in stages from a company in exchange for a list of the telco’s customers under its 2017 prepaid plan.

The “content provider” company is known to have used the phone numbers to charge customers via SMS without their knowledge or permission.

On Tuesday, the MACC detained three company directors for five days on suspicion of giving bribes worth millions of ringgit as part of a syndicate of SMS scams.

Two of the directors are said to be Datuks.

The three are said to be directors of different companies and have apparently been giving bribes to telecommunications companies to access customers’ phone numbers.

It is believed that they bribed workers at telecommunications companies to obtain the telephone numbers of their clients.
