PETALING JAYA: The increase in Covid-19 cases in the country indicates that the targeted approach method has shown a positive impact in detecting the virus, says Director General of Health, Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah.

“The public does not have to worry about the increase in new cases following an aggressive and proactive government-led approach, as this demonstrates the effectiveness of this method.

“The detected cases are being isolated and treated in hospitals to ensure that the virus does not spread in the community,” he said yesterday during his daily press conference.

Dr. Noor Hisham said that, based on the directed approach method, the ministry, until May 10, had identified selected groups to be examined.

These were the participants of the Sri Petaling Tabligh and their close contacts, students and employees of the Madrasah and Tahfiz who were linked to the Sri Petaling group, and the Malays who returned from abroad.

“It includes our health care workers, residents of improved motion control order (MCO) locations, the Kuala Lumpur wholesale market and markets linked to it, and also foreign workers on construction sites in red zones, as well as in nursing homes, “he said.

Dr. Noor Hisham assured the Malays that Covid-19 cases in the country were under control.

67 new cases of Covid-19 were reported yesterday, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 6,656. Of the 67 cases, 49 involved foreigners, while the rest were local broadcasts.

“There are currently 18 patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), with six in ventilator support,” he said.

He added that another 96 patients were discharged, bringing the total number of recoveries to 5,025.

There are 1,523 active cases under treatment in the country’s health centers. No new deaths have been reported, which means that the number of deaths remains at 108.

Separately, Dr. Noor Hisham noted that the spread of Covid-19 among aliens was possibly due to tight spaces.

He said this could be seen in places like Selangor Mansion, Malayan Mansion, and Menara City One.

“There are 30 people living in an apartment. The same goes for construction areas, where at least 15 people live in an apartment, ”he said.

To date, Dr. Noor Hisham said that 24,125 foreigners had been evaluated with 1,132 positive cases.

He said that currently 487 foreigners were being treated, while three foreigners were in the ICU, adding that among them, four deaths had been reported so far.
