The loan of Takumi Minamino to Southampton went a bit unnoticed.
The Saints initially approached Liverpool with a view to signing Neco Williams, but it later became clear that the Japanese midfielder was available.
The 26-year-old has never had the impact he expected at Anfield and should have a lot more regular playing time with Ralph Hasnehuttl.
The Southampton manager had to change something, in any case, after seeing the team lose 9-0 to Manchester United – unbelievably – their second loss by that margin in just 15 months.
That meant Minamino was thrown straight into St James’ Park against Newcastle, but Southampton again got off to a terrible start.
The Magpies took a 2-0 lead on goals from Joe Willock and an own goal from Jan Bednarek (yes, seriously, him again).
Minamino had also gotten off to a worrying start when he was brought down by Jeff Hendrick and initially appeared to have suffered an injury.
Fortunately, he was fine to keep playing and scored a brilliant goal on his debut.
What a finale! Jurgen Klopp will certainly be delighted. If only Liverpool’s current forwards could do the same right now …
