KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court today set three days from October 26 to hear the RM 100 million defamation lawsuit of property developer Synergy Promenade Sdn Bhd against former Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) Chairman Shahrir Abdul Samad in relation to the agency’s lands.
The dates were set by Judge Wong Chee Lin during the handling of today’s case.
“The court sets October 26-28 for the hearing. Four of the five witnesses from both sides are expected to testify, ”Shahrir’s lawyer Ranjit Singh told reporters.
He said the court had previously set March 26 and 27 to hear the case, but that the process was postponed due to the motion control order.
On June 4, 2018, Synergy Promenade filed a lawsuit against Shahrir, then president of Felda, for allegedly issuing various defamatory statements between December 2017 and March 2018, which were posted on Facebook, YouTube, and news portals.
According to the claim statement, the company says that Shahrir’s statements have tarnished his reputation and caused him to lose projects he was already working on.
The company is seeking a court order to prevent the defendant from republishing the statements, as well as compensation of Ringgit 100 million, benefits, costs and other appropriate reparations.
