PETALING JAYA: Two men who allegedly tricked a 90-year-old woman into parting with almost RM4 million in a phone scam were arrested by police last week.

The local suspects, aged 36 and 43 and part of a Macau scam syndicate, were arrested at a restaurant in Shah Alam on September 3.

Petaling Jaya Police Chief, ACP, Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal, said yesterday that the victim had allegedly received a call from the Poslaju courier company and was told that there was a package sent from Ipoh bound for Sabah.

He said the caller told the retiree that the package contained an identity card and a bank card with his name on it.

Nik Ezanee said the caller later transferred the call to a “Sergeant Ho Mum Foo” and his superior “Inspector Herman Lee”, who were allegedly personnel from Perak’s commercial crime investigations department.

“The victim was accused of being involved in money laundering activities by the duo. They said their details were used by a 72-year-old former Maybank employee who had allegedly been arrested by police. Then the victim was threatened with arrest and detention for 45 days if he trusted someone about the case, ”he said.

Nik Ezanee said that out of fear, the woman followed the scammers’ orders and was given multiple bank account numbers.

She transferred her savings worth RM3.83 million to seven different business accounts in various transactions between April 20 and June 15 of this year. After realizing that she had been misled, she filed a police report.
