Suspected truck thief drowns after jumping into Sungai Johor to escape police

KOTA TINGGI: An alleged truck thief drowned after jumping into Sungai Johor here in an attempt to escape from the police.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Superintendent Hussin Zamora said the incident occurred around 12.15pm on Monday (February 8).

“A police team on patrol saw a truck involved in a hit-and-run incident with another vehicle along Jalan Kota Tinggi-Johor Baru here.

“We chased the truck in an attempt to arrest the two suspects, but they left the vehicle near the Semanggar Bridge and immediately jumped onto Sungai Johor,” he said here.

He added that one of the suspects was believed to have drowned due to the strong currents of the river, while the other suspect was able to escape along the river bank.

Superintendent Hussin said a search and rescue operation was carried out immediately with the help of the Fire and Rescue Department.

“The body is recovered by the department’s diving team around 6 pm. The body became entangled with pieces of wood about 50 meters from where the suspect had jumped, “he added.

He also said that the victim, who is local and in his 30s, died at the scene and his body was sent to Kota Tinggi Hospital for an autopsy.

Superintendent Hussin added that police classified the case as sudden death, while truck controls found it was reported stolen in the Kepong area.

He said police were in the middle of tracking down the other suspect who escaped at the scene.
