IPOH: A 35-year-old man was arrested after he sped up his car which was pulled over by police for inspection, leading to a high-speed chase in Slim River.
Muallim OCPD Supt Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said the incident occurred on Wednesday (November 25) around 1.45 pm.
He said the suspect was arrested after several shots were fired at him as he tried to ram his car into a policeman.
Superintendent Sulizmie said the driver was detained by the Slim River Police Covid-19 monitoring team along Jalan Kuala Slim as he was behaving suspiciously.
“While the controls were being carried out, the suspect sped towards the town of Slim River, and there was a high-speed chase between the suspect and the police until they reached a polytechnic in Behrang.
“A police mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) also helped stop the suspect, and when one of the MPV staff warned the suspect to stop, the driver tried to ram his car into the police officer.
“At that time, several shots were fired and the suspect was arrested,” he said.
Superintendent Sulizmie said controls inside the car found a backpack consisting of clear plastics believed to be used to wrap medications.
The suspect has four prior convictions, while a urinalysis confirmed he was positive for methamphetamine.
The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, Section 42 (1) of the Highway Transportation Act of 1987 for reckless driving and Section 15 (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1952 for drug use.
The suspect is in custody until November 30.
