KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The main contractor and subcontractor for the Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Expressway (SUKE) highway project has been fined RM180,000 for failing to ensure safety at the road construction site.
Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said this happened after an incident in which a concrete slab fell from the elevated road and crushed a passing vehicle on September 19.
Responding to a question from Senator Md Nasir Hashim on Thursday (December 17) about the action taken against the prime contractor in Dewan Negara, he said that the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) had carried out a procedure of disciplinary action against the contractor on November 17 and imposed sanctions on the main contractor and subcontractor of the SUKE Package CA2 project.
“The main contractor, MRCB Builders Sdn Bhd, was fined RM80,000, while the subcontractor, Makna Setia Sdn Bhd, was fined RM100,000.
“The two contractors were fined respectively in accordance with Section 34B (1) (c) and Section 34C (1) of the Malaysian Construction Industry Development Board Act 1994 (Act 520), which establishes that it is the contractor’s duty to ensure the safety of buildings and construction work during or after construction, ”he said.
Fadillah said the CIDB investigation also found that the subcontractor did not follow proper work procedures and had hired a site supervisor without accreditation.
Through disciplinary procedures, the subcontractor was also instructed to make improvements to safety procedures to ensure public safety, project alignment, work and handling practices, as well as construction site management for the duration of the project.
“Throughout the investigation, both companies cooperated well, including a commitment to improve procedures and implement a safer and more conducive working environment,” he said.
In the September 19 incident, a woman narrowly escaped when a concrete slab from the SUKE building structure fell on her car while driving on the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) from Sungai Besi in the direction of Ampang.
Fortunately, the woman left with minor injuries to her arm, although her car was seriously damaged. – Bernama
