PETAL JAYAThe Shah Alam Magistrates Court today rejected a request for a remand order by the police on the 34-year-old founder of Sugarbook.com.

Selangor Police CID Chief SAC Datuk Fadzil Ahmat said that after this, the director of the state prosecutor’s office had submitted a request to re-examine the decision of the Magistrates Court.

He said the request will be heard in Shah Alam High Court tomorrow at 9 am.

Fadzil said that in the meantime, the suspect was again arrested today for a separate case reported in Subang Jaya by a student from a higher education institution in February 2019.

He said the case is classified as rape and solicitation of prostitution under Section 376 and Section 372 of the Penal Code.

The founder of the controversial dating site Sugarbook.com was arrested by police last night at the complex of a luxury condominium, the Icon Residence in Persiaran Dutamas, Mont Kiara.

The suspect who is from Penang was detained by Shah Alam police.

Fadzil said the suspect had admitted to being the founder of the dating website.

He said police have received 74 reports against the website to date.

The man was arrested for an investigation into the request for prostitution and for publishing a statement or rumor that may cause fear or alarm in the public according to the laws of the Penal Code.

The suspect is also being investigated for misuse of network facilities under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998.

Police launched investigations into the website after it named 10 public and private universities for having the most students who chose to become “sugar babies” and sought out “sugar daddies” to fund their lifestyles.

Sunway University topped the list with more than 21% of the 14,433 students from the 10 universities that were supposedly registered on the website as “sugar babies.”

Calling the website’s actions irresponsible in the pursuit of profit, Sunway University expressed disappointment and lashed out at website operators after the list went viral last week.
