KUALA LUMPUR: A shouting match erupted again in Dewan Rakyat after Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) dismissed a ruling by President Datuk Seri Azhar Azizan Harun as “stupid”, which saw DAP legislator being kicked out of the House and slapped a five-day suspension.
The altercation started just before Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s scheduled speech on Budget 2021 at 11am on Thursday (Nov 12), when Sim Tze Tzin (PH-Bayan Baru) raised a point of order.
Sim said that Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing’s (GPS-Bintulu) “nasty comments” against Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah should be addressed in the House as it had gone against the Standing Order. 36 (9), where no references will be made in any debate on the conduct of a deputy or an official.
Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan) stood up in support of Sim and said that Tiong should apologize for asking if Dr. Noor Hisham feared for his life from Covid-19.
Guan Eng added that Vice President Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said’s ruling on the matter on Wednesday (November 11) should be reviewed.
In response, Azhar said Azalina’s ruling was final according to Standing Order 43, at which point Lip Eng stood up to protest.
“But that’s a stupid decision! The Speaker must not be in cahoots with Bintulu, ”he shouted.
Azhar demanded the Kepong MP to leave the House and gave him an initial two-day suspension.
However, Lip Eng refused to leave the House despite having up to three sergeants behind him to escort him, at which point Azhar threatened to call the police.
“I’m going to call the police. Get out now,” he warned.
“Easy, President,” said a defiant Lip Eng, who saw Azhar demanding that the Kepong MP leave the House immediately.
Lip Eng, who defiantly insisted on staying in the hall, was later punished with a five-day suspension by Azhar when he again threatened to call the police.
Parliamentarians from both sides of the division were embroiled in a shouting match, where MPs from the ruling coalition demanded that opposition MPs stop arguing about the matter as Dr. Mahathir was about to begin his speech on the 2021 Budget.
Lip Eng subsequently left the House and Guan Eng asked Azhar if he was willing to consider a substantive motion to deliberate on Tiong’s comments and Azalina’s ruling on Wednesday.
Guan Eng’s comments came as Dr. Mahathir stood up and was about to deliver his speech.
“They are trying to annoy the MP from Langkawi (Dr. Mahathir). Langkawi, please stop supporting DAP, ”said Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (BN-Arau), who seemed visibly upset.
Other MPs also accused the DAP of trying to obstruct Dr. Mahathir’s speech, which was already delayed for almost 30 minutes at the time.
“The Speaker has already made a decision. Please respect the Spokesperson, ”said Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub (BN-Machang).
Guan Eng reiterated his points before being fired by Azhar, who subsequently invited Dr. Mahathir to deliver his speech. Finally.
In a subsequent press conference, Guan Eng said that Pakatan MPs have not given up and that they will soon table another motion in Parliament to deliberate on Azalina’s ruling on Tiong.
“We hope that the president admits that there is an oversight and that this ruling should be reviewed,” he said.
On Wednesday, Tiong sparked a shouting match in Parliament involving opposition MPs after he asked if Dr. Noor Hisham feared for his life because he did not go to the ground in Sabah when Covid-19 cases were in his wake. highest point in the state.
