PETALING JAYA: Student activist Wong Yan Ke was arrested today while recording video of a police raid on the home of a fellow activist.
Selangor police confirmed tonight that a 24-year-old man had been arrested while conducting a live video feed on Facebook while a CID unit carried out a raid on a house in Petaling Jaya. They did not identify him.
“After a warning was given and ignored, the police arrested the man and confiscated the man’s mobile phone for obstructing the duties of public servants, and he was taken to the Petaling Jaya district headquarters for further action and investigations.” says the statement.
A member of the University Malaya New Youth Association (Umany) said that Wong had been arrested for obstructing the police and was being held for questioning overnight.
“I was simply recording a video of the police who were about to search Robin Yap Wen Qing’s house. Around 8:50 pm, the police said that Wong will be detained overnight and will only be released tomorrow, ”said the Umany member.
Wong, a former president of Umany, was detained after police went to Yap’s home as part of investigations into alleged sedition and misuse of network facilities in connection with a statement by Umany about Yang’s role. di-Pertuan Agong.
Current Umany Chairman Yap and Vice Chairman Tan Li Yuan are being investigated for an article titled “Yang di-Pertuan Agong Should Not Intervene in National Affairs” that was posted on the group’s Facebook page last week.
