KOTA BARU (Bernama): Malaysia’s Islamic Development Department (Jakim) will tighten the standard operating procedure and application (SOP) for halal certification for imported products, including meat brought in by cartels.
The Deputy Minister of the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Ahmad Marzuk Shaary said this was to ensure that everyone, especially Muslims, can get a clean and halal flood supply, according to Islamic standards.
“God willing, with the (meat cartel scandal) exposed, the government, including Jakim, will improve SOP and compliance monitoring, and if necessary increase its (Jakim) workforce,” he told the journalists after attending the Pengkalan Chepa level. circumcision ceremony in Dewan Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam, near here, on Saturday (December 26).
The media had reported on the cartel’s tactic of smuggling frozen horse and kangaroo meat from certain countries and passing it off as beef by repackaging the meat and using the halal logo before selling it to supermarkets in Malaysia.
Marzuk said that after this discovery, Jakim would intensify collaboration with relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Affairs to solve the problem. – Bernama
