PETALING JAYA: Several states will face significantly heavy rains and the northeast monsoon season is expected to begin on Wednesday (November 11), says the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
“The northeast monsoon or rainy season in Malaysia is expected to start on November 11 this year and end in March next year.
“Four to six episodes of heavy rainfall are expected to occur during this period,” MetMalaysia CEO Jailan Simon said in a statement on Monday (November 9).
He said the initial phase of the monsoon is expected to bring heavy rains to Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang in November and December.
“Starting in January 2021, the heavy rain episodes are expected to focus on Pahang, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak,” he added.
Jailan said the second phase of the monsoon is expected to start in late January next year, which will generally bring dry weather to several northern states such as Kedah, Penang, Perlis and Kelantan.
He said continuous heavy rains for several days could cause flooding in low-lying areas and those prone to flooding.
“The risk of flooding will be exacerbated if heavy rains occur simultaneously during high tides and storms,” he warned.
Continued strong winds due to the monsoon could also result in rough waters and huge waves in the South China Sea, Jailan said.
He urged the public to be prepared for the rainy season and to be on the lookout for MetMalaysia’s warnings of heavy rain, high winds and rough seas through its website, social media platforms or the myCuaca app.
He said those seeking further clarification can contact MetMalaysia at 1-300-22-1638.
