PETALING JAYA: The public should stop spreading false news that 13 cabinet ministers have tested positive for Covid-19, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The defense minister dismissed the claims as false and warned that action could be taken against those who spread false news.
He said authorities were committed to verifying fake news that could cause public panic.
“You can also take action against those who send the fake news,” he said.
As of Thursday (October 8), the police and the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission had opened 270 investigative documents related to fake news associated with Covid-19.
“A total of 133 cases are still under investigation.
“Of the 35 defendants in court, 19 pleaded guilty and another 12 received warning notices,” he said on Facebook live Thursday.
The Rapid Response Team of the Ministry of Communication and Multimedia had issued denials related to 384 fake news articles related to Covid-19.
Previously, Ismail said the police-led enforcement task force had conducted 54,494 checks, including 3,447 supermarkets, 4,393 restaurants, 1,501 street vendors, 2,454 markets, 3,134 places of worship and 1,254 recreation areas.
Actions were taken against 420 people for breach of orders, of which 380 received composite notifications.
A total of 39 offenders were placed in preventive detention and one was released on bail.
The crimes committed included not observing social distancing (145), not wearing a mask (117), not providing tools or recording personal data (96), participating in activities in entertainment centers (26), non-compliance with the conditional OLS (26) , operate premises beyond the stipulated time (six), work without permits (three) and employ foreigners without permits (one).
From July 24 to October 7, a total of 43,968 people who had returned from abroad had been subjected to mandatory quarantine orders.
“Currently, 10,302 people are in quarantine in 68 hotels and 15 other locations, including public and private training institutes in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pulau Pinang, Johor, Sarawak, Kelantan, Perak, Kedah, Perlis, Terengganu, Sabah and Labuan.
“A total of 106 were taken to the hospital for treatment, and 33,560 were discharged and allowed to go home,” he said.
