PETALING JAYA: A PKR assemblyman criticized Dr. Mahathir Mohamad for claiming that Anwar Ibrahim had refused to visit the then prime minister despite obtaining a royal pardon for his past offenses.
This comes after Mahathir claimed that the PKR chairman was “cold and critical” of him when he was PH prime minister, adding that Anwar had visited “everyone” but him after his royal pardon.
Kota Anggerik Assemblyman Najwan Halimi told Mahathir to stop lying. He said that Anwar had visited the President of Pejuang numerous times after his release from prison.
Najwan, who is also the head of the Selangor PKR Youth, told the FMT that Anwar had also reiterated his commitment to support Mahathir’s leadership as prime minister several times.
“There was no problem with Anwar not caring about Tun (as Tun claims) after his release. Every time Anwar visited and met Tun, whether officially or unofficially, he reiterated his commitment to support Tun.
“In fact, whenever the media asked him about the transition of power, Anwar kept his commitment to support Tun and asked that Tun be given the space to rule.
“Therefore, it is unnecessary for Tun to lie and make statements that represent the opposite,” he said.
In a Twitter post, Najwan noted that Anwar and his wife, Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, had visited Mahathir and his wife, Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, on June 5, 2018, less than a month later. of his royal pardon on May 16. .
Anwar had also shared numerous images of Anwar meeting with Mahathir on different occasions, he said.
In an interview with the Malaysia Gazette, Mahathir said that Anwar refused to visit him after his release from prison and had also become “critical” of him over time.
He said this made him think twice before appointing Anwar as minister.
“Of course, I promised to appoint him as prime minister, but we must remember, so that we can appoint someone to be prime minister, only Parliament can decide who is qualified to be one,” he said.
Mahathir had previously promised an eventual handover of the prime minister post to Anwar after a few years as part of a PH consensus ahead of the 2018 elections.
