GEORGE TOWN: A veteran social activist warns that a new wave of Covid-19 cases would emerge if general elections (GE15) are called, especially in the wake of the increase in cases in Sabah in recent weeks.
Lee Lam Thye said, therefore, that GE15 should be postponed as long as possible to prevent the spread of the virus until a viable vaccine is discovered.
“Any election held now could reverse the efforts of leaders, such as health workers and security forces, over the past seven months.
“Furthermore, holding elections costs hundreds of millions of ringgit and labor. How are we going to manage it? Do we have sufficient funds? Can we afford it? This has to be considered, ”he said, urging the current government to remain until it has served its full term.
The next federal elections must be held on or before September 16, 2023. According to the federal constitution, general elections must be called no later than 60 days after the end of the five years from the first session of the 14th Parliament, which was on July 17, 2018.
“In my opinion, the current government is better off serving its full term, or else Covid-19 will surely increase,” he said at a Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) forum near here today.
It responded to a question about whether future surveys should be avoided in light of the new Covid-19 clusters.
On a separate note, Lee, who is also a senior vice president at MCPF, said there was a 91% increase in cybercrime related to money, shopping and travel scams between March 18 and June 30, compared to the same period last year.
Police data also showed RM305 million lost to online scams this year, he said.
