PUTRAJAYA: Classifying students according to their academic performance will have a psychological effect on schoolchildren and the Ministry of Education is not happy with the practice.

Education Minister Radzi Jidin stressed that labeling of students “kelas belakang” (backward) in schools should not happen, especially in primary school.

He said it was too early to label elementary school students in certain categories, as they were just developing their potential at that age.

“Personally, I believe that each human being is created with their own unique strengths, only that sometimes we are not aware of it… perhaps in the field of education they stand out less.

“We don’t know where its potential may be. That is why I always advise students not to be labeled ‘kelas depan’ (acting) or ‘kelas belakang’ (poor performance) because this will have a psychological effect on our children ”, he said in an interview with Bernama in“ Malaysia Prihatin ”Achievements from the ministry recently.

In this context, Radzi said the ministry will focus on an approach that optimizes the potential of students, starting from elementary school, in an effort to produce a generation that is confident in their own strengths.

He said the focus of the ministry now was to discover the potential of students based on their strengths and assets, and develop their talents.

“This is one of the best spaces for us, especially at the elementary level. We look at where their strengths lie so we can develop them and they can also optimize the strengths they have.

In another development, the minister said that there was a greater response to technical and vocational education and training (TVET) among students who wanted to obtain spaces and opportunities in the programs offered in the field.

He said the ministry’s intention was to ensure that TVET students received an education in line with current developments in the industry.
