PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that nine high-ranking police officers have been called in to help investigate Macau and online gambling scam activities.

However, sources said the officers have not been detained.

“They were summoned for their statements to be recorded. There are no arrests for now,” said a source with knowledge of the case.

The sources indicated that to date 39 witnesses have been called to register their statements and of that number, 19 have been forwarded.

There are nine people still in MACC custody, the same source said.

“Two main suspects in the case will be brought before a magistrate in Putrajaya tomorrow (October 10) to have his pretrial detention extended.

“The MACC is aggressively tracking the remaining union members with a given approach to finding members of the enforcement agency who are involved,” the source said.

To date, the MACC has frozen 736 accounts and seized RM 101 million.

Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki revealed on Thursday that 20 people, including eight police officers, have been arrested for their involvement in a Macau online gambling and scam syndicate.

MACC investigators also seized 23 luxury cars from various brands – Bentley, Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Porsche – believed to have been purchased from returns from illegal activities carried out by the individuals.

It is understood that celebrities and famous personalities were among the victims of the scam, and Azam said that some may have known.

or unknowingly accepted money from this union for commercial purposes.
