PETALING JAYA: STAR and Perikatan Nasional (PN) are backing Inanam incumbent Kenny Chua and some independents in the Sabah elections, STAR President Jeffrey Kitingan confirmed today.

However, according to Malaysiakini, Jeffrey said Chua asked for their support.

“It was understood that the incumbent (of Inanam) will have the opportunity to continue (to serve as an assemblyman), so I support him,” he was reported to have said at an event in Keningau this afternoon.

This means that PN will campaign against PBS, the local party that is PN’s friend, in Inanam, backing Chua.

Jeffrey also said that the other independents who were incumbents would have a chance to join PN when they won.

However, it did not disclose the number of headlines that supported the PN. “Not everything. Just some of them,” he said.

In July, Chua, who at the time was the assistant to Sabah’s finance minister, defected from the PKR to support the proposal by former Sabah chief minister Musa Aman to form a new government, which subsequently led to the dissolution of the state assembly.

Yesterday, The Star reported that at least two independents were being “adopted” as candidates by STAR.

In addition to Chua, Tandek incumbent Anita Baranting, who is defending her seat, reported that her proponent and her deputy were members of the Tandek STAR division.
