SRC Appeal: Najib Gets 30 Day Extension to File Appeal Request

PUTRAJAYA (Bernama): Datuk Seri Najib Razak has obtained a 30-day extension to present his petition for appeal in his case SRC International Sdn Bhd.

A three-man panel of the Court of Appeal consisting of Justices Datuk Has Zanah Mehat, Datuk Lee Swee Seng, and Datuk Nordin Hassan allowed Najib’s request for time to be extended to allow him to file the appeal petition after the prosecution failed. oppose her.

Lawyer Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee, representing Najib, requested an extension of the time from September 18 to October 18 to present the appeal petition.

He told the court that the reason for the extension request was due to the fact that the appeal file consisted of 112 volumes and the basis for the Superior Court ruling was 801 pages.

“For the sake of substantive justice, we need time to properly prepare the petition,” he said.

Deputy Prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul informed the court that the prosecution has no objection to the request.

According to court procedure, the defense in Najib’s appeal has 10 days to file the appeal petition after receiving the appeal records. The deadline for filing the appeal request is Monday (September 28).

Najib is appealing his conviction, 12 years in jail and a fine of RM210,000 imposed by the High Court on July 28 this year.

The 67-year-old former prime minister was found guilty on seven counts of criminal breach of trust, money laundering and abuse of position involving RM42million of SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.

Najib was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the offense related to abuse of power, 10 years in prison each for three counts of breach of trust.

The Pekan deputy was also sentenced to 10 years in jail for each of the three money laundering charges. The High Court ordered that all sentences be executed at the same time.

Najib is currently out on RM2mil bail on two guarantees pending appeal in the Court of Appeal.

Meanwhile, the prosecution also filed an appeal brief on August 11 against the sentence imposed on Najib by the High Court. However, it is known that the prosecution has not yet presented its appeal.

Najib’s appeal is set for case management on October 2.
