SINGAPORE: The Woodlands North station in Singapore for the rapid transit system (RTS) link will be about 10 times the size of a typical mass rapid transit (MRT) station, according to the republic’s transport minister Ong Ye Kung.

He said this was because the station will include a customs, immigration and quarantine (CIQ) building, where travelers can clear documentation with a stop.

Singapore kicked off construction of the RTS Johor Bahru – Singapore link at the Woodlands North site on Friday.

This occurred exactly two months after Malaysia had its inauguration ceremony at the Bukit Chagar CIQ site on November 22 last year.

Ong said the ceremony marked the start of infrastructure works to connect Singapore and Johor Bahru via an LRT, which is closer to a medium capacity MRT.

“This is an important bilateral project between Singapore and Malaysia, which will benefit our two peoples and help ease congestion on the Causeway,” Ong said on his official Facebook page late Friday.

The RTS Link is a 4 km rail transport service between the Singapore Terminal at Woodlands North Station and the Malaysia Terminal at Bukit Chagar Station in Johor Bahru.

It has a large capacity of up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction.

Meanwhile, the Republic Land Transportation Authority said the RTS Link Woodlands North station will be built underground to a maximum depth of 28 meters.

It will comprise three floors, with two basement levels and an underground link to the CIQ building.

He said the facilities will be adjacent to the Thomson-East Coast Line Woodlands North MRT station and will be seamlessly connected via an underground esplanade.

“The tunnels will be connected to the viaduct that crosses the Strait of Johor at a height of 25 meters,” he said.
