PETALING JAYA: A group of medical specialists has expressed concern over the decision to allow small meetings under the Conditional Movement Control (MCO) order during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri season.
While welcoming the extension of the MCO until June 9 to curb the spread of Covid-19, the Malaysian Academy of Medicine (AMM) said it was “deeply disappointed” that Hari’s small parties were still allowed Stripe.
“This could undo all the good work to control the Covid-19 pandemic so far in our country.
“It has been shown that only one infected person, especially asymptomatic or false negatives from the currently used Covid-19 test, has been shown to spread the disease,” it said in a statement.
AMM is a registered body representing medical specialists in Malaysia from 11 colleges and 15 chapters.
In asking the government to review the relaxation of its meeting policy, AMM proposed that Hari Raya’s face-to-face celebrations only take place among family members residing in the same house.
“We must remember the immense difficulties and massive resources required to follow up on contacts,” AMM said, adding that new Covid-19 groups were still emerging, and the lack of surveillance would likely exacerbate the situation.
“Excessive relaxation of the MCO’s conditional restrictions will potentially reverse the hard-won victories achieved through the sacrifices of the rakyats and frontline.
“Covid-19 remains an active threat and the Malays must work together to prevent its spread.
“We note that new groups are still emerging and failure to adhere to precautions will increase this.
“We need to remain vigilant and not let our guard down.
“Current habits of good hand hygiene, maintaining physical distance, avoiding mass gatherings, and wearing face masks in public have yet to be followed,” he said.
