PETALING JAYA: A special workforce, comprising multiple law enforcement agencies, has been successfully blocking the routes used by illegal immigrants and traffickers to enter the country, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The Defense Minister noted that this was the first time that such a working group had been created to block illegal avenues along the country’s porous land and sea borders.

The working group, made up of uniformed enforcement agencies, is chaired by the Armed Forces.

“I have not made this public, but we have already arrested traffickers (tekong) who have tried to bring immigrants who use these illegal routes,” he said yesterday during his daily briefing on the conditional movement control order (MCO). .

Ismail Sabri said that Malaysia had closed its borders to foreigners and that having a family in the country was not an excuse for them to come.

Meanwhile, he said the Covid-19 migrant worker groups originated from outsiders.

“For example, in the case of the group of foreign workers in Rembau, an outside employee visited them, probably for salary reasons, and infected them,” he said.

Ismail Sabri said construction workers in Setia Alam were positive after their employer brought them in for testing as part of the SOP before they could continue working.

On Saturday, fifty-three foreign workers tested positive for Covid-19 at a factory in Pedas, Rembau. Seven more in the same group were Malaysians.

Setia Alam’s group had 12 migrant workers who tested positive.

Ismail Sabri said he would propose that migrant workers have identification tags to show that they were tested and that they were free of Covid-19.

Under the conditional MCO, the government had made it mandatory for all migrant workers returning to work to undergo the Covid-19 assessment.

On another topic, Ismail Sabri said that the improved MCO in the areas surrounding the Jalan Othman market would affect 2,900 people in commercial and residential premises.

“The government asked all residents to remain calm and extend their full cooperation.

“All residents will be screened and food packages will be distributed to residents,” he said.

Parts of Petaling Jaya’s old town have undergone an improved MCO as of May 10 after authorities found 26 positive cases of Covid-19 involving market workers.
