PETALING JAYA: A total of 13 police reports have been filed in relation to the meat cartel, which used false “halal” labels, says Comm Datuk Huzir Mohamed. (Photo).

Bukit Aman’s CID director said the case is being handled by the CID’s Special Investigation Unit.

“We are investigating under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code for causing fear and alarm in the public,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (December 29).

Initial investigations revealed that the illegal activity involved a wide network together with local and foreign unions based on the total seizures and their value, it added.

“Our investigation will include the acquisition, storage, processing, smuggling, as well as the parties that have been manipulated or in collusion with the unions to bring frozen meat with an Approved Permit (AP).

“We are taking this matter seriously and we are committed to curbing this activity through cooperation with various agencies, including the Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Affairs and the Customs Department,” he said.

Stern action is warranted as unions have caused public distress, especially issues related to the sensitivity of Islam, said Comm Huzir.

“Illegal activity has also disrupted public order and tarnished the nation’s image as a halal center.”

“We are also taking into account the economic impact,” he added.

Comm Huzir urged those with information to come forward to assist in the investigation rather than spreading unverified news on social media.

“Such actions can cause public distress and threaten the harmony of the nation,” he added.
