South Korean club-linked Covid-19 cluster infections rise to 102

SEOUL (Xinhua): The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 related to infection by clusters of clubs and bars in a multicultural neighborhood of Itaewon in the South Korean capital, Seoul, increased to 102 as of noon Tuesday, local time, according to the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).

It was up 16 compared to 24 hours earlier. Of the total, 64 were residents of Seoul and 23 residents of the Gyeonggi Province surrounding Seoul.

Seven patients came from the western port city of Incheon, five from North Chungcheong Province, one from North Jeolla Province, one from the southeastern port city of Busan and one from the southern tourist island of Jeju, each .

Of the total, 73 were patients who visited the Itaewon clubs and later tested positive for the virus, while 29 were family members or acquaintances of the patients.

The cluster infection is believed to have started with a 29-year-old man who visited a total of five clubs and bars in Itaewon from the night of May 1 to the early hours of May 2. He tested positive and was admitted to a hospital on the morning of May 6.

At least 5,500 people are believed to have visited the clubs and bars, attended by the 29-year-old. Of the total, the health authorities did not reach around 2,000.

People who toured entertainment venues in Itaewon from April 24 to May 6 were asked by the KCDC to refrain from outside activities and to screen for the virus regardless of symptoms.

As of 12 a.m. local time on Tuesday, South Korea reported 27 more cases of Covid-19 compared to 24 hours ago, bringing the total infection to 10,936.

After hitting bottom at two on May 6, the number of daily cases continued to rise to 12 on Friday, 18 on Saturday, 34 on Sunday and 35 on Monday each. – Xinhua
