SEOUL: South Korean health authorities are studying what could be the first case of coronavirus reinfection in the country, found in a woman in her 20s, reports the Yonhap news agency quoted officials on Saturday.

“The investigation into a suspected case of reinfection is ongoing in the country,” said Kwon Joon Wook, deputy director of the Central Headquarters for Disease Control, at a news conference.

The patient was diagnosed with Covid-19 in March and was released from isolation after recovery, but was confirmed to be infected again in early April, he said.

Authorities believe the woman was likely infected through different routes, but more studies are needed to reach a conclusion, Kwon said.

“We believe that each infection came from a different cluster, as has happened in other cases of reinfection in foreign countries,” he said.

There have been hundreds of Korean patients who tested positive for the second time after recovery. The experts did not consider them reinfections and said that the dead virus fragments that remained in the bodies of the patients were likely detected in the tests.

South Korea reported 110 more cases of the virus on Saturday, most related to local cluster infections. The total number of cases reached 22,893. – Named
