Sony PlayStation 5: Unofficial PS5 faceplate seller forced to cancel all orders or risk legal action

The upcoming Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) is one of the most anticipated next-gen consoles gamers have been waiting for and is set to hit retail stores in select markets this month. Naturally, there are some companies looking to cash in on the initial wave of enthusiastic PS5 buyers. Now, a peripheral company that sells custom PS5 faceplates has gotten into legal trouble with Sony and has been forced to recall the product and cancel all of its orders.

According to a report by VGC, a UK-based company, formerly known as PlateStation5.com, had been forced to re-brand to CustomizeMyPlates.com after receiving a complaint from Sony for trademark infringement. . The company explained in an email that it had done its due diligence prior to its launch and thought that since Sony only had patents pending on the faceplates, there would be no problem.

However, Sony did not finish, as their lawyers told CustomizeMyPlates that Sony’s intellectual property extended to the faceplates themselves. If they continued to sell and distribute the custom faceplates in any country, Sony would take them to court.

This led the peripheral maker to cancel and refund all of its faceplate orders around the world as it sought to avoid a legal battle with the Japanese tech giant.

Before stopping selling the faceplates, the company was receiving orders for unofficial PS5 faceplates in a variety of different colors for USD39.99 (~ RM166) each. At the time, he promised to ship the product to his customers within two weeks of the console’s launch date.

A quick review on its website showed that the company sold more than just faceplates as it also included gaming chairs as well as charging stands for game controllers and consoles among its products.

The company said it was working with manufacturers in the UK and China to create the cases that it claimed were made of “premium industry standard plastic” based on the official dimensions of the PS5.

In early October, Sony released a teardown video demonstrating how the white panels on both sides of the console can be easily removed by lifting and sliding them. Since then, Sony hasn’t announced any other variations of the PS5 apart from the standard white design. It has also not made a commitment to launch accessories like faceplates in the future.

Obviously not everyone likes the new white color scheme that Sony introduced. Obviously some PlayStation fans are hoping for a black version of the PS5, a return to the classic color scheme used on previous consoles dating back to the PS2.

Sony has confirmed that the PS5 will be sold in select markets such as the United States and Japan this month on November 12 and then to the rest of the world, including Asia, on November 19. The company also revealed that the PS5 Digital Edition will cost $ 399.99 (~ RM1,652) while PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will be sold $ 499.99 (~ RM2,065).
