KUALA LUMPUR: Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) has received complaints that some pawnshops are putting pressure on people who are not so familiar with the moratorium by imposing charges even during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) period ).

FOMCA’s director of operations, Saravanan Thambirajah, urged the Ministry of Housing and Local Government to control the pawn shops that they were charging consumers.

He said the Malaysian Pawn Brokers Association had previously reported that the charges should not be imposed for three months, that is, from March 18 to May 12.

“FOMCA has received complaints from consumers who have pawned their jewelry and have been asked to pay the charges for up to nine months. Therefore, the ministry has to monitor all of these pawn shops.

“The ministry should take the initiative to help people. FOMCA expects that appropriate measures will be taken to protect consumer rights against bullying simply because they are from low-income groups, ”he said in a statement earlier today.

Saravanan said the ministry also gave people the opportunity to report their situation via social media or use WhatsApp by sending photos and information of the pawn broker involved. –Bernama
