KUALA LUMPUR: Marriage solemnization ceremonies can be held at all kariah mosques and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) offices in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, starting tomorrow.

According to the Guidelines for the Marriage Solemnization Ceremony during the Movement Control Order (MCO) issued by JAWI, only five people are allowed to attend, namely the bride and groom, wali (guardian) and two representatives of the couple .

The marriage officer and two witnesses must also be from JAWI and the mosque where the ceremony is taking place.

“For brides and grooms from different states who are in red zones, the number of attendees is also restricted to five people,” according to the guidelines updated today.

Only one photographer may attend the ceremony and must comply with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the solemnization must not exceed 20 minutes.

In addition, formal handshake between the marriage officer and the groom, as well as those attending the ceremony, is not allowed and the physical distance of one meter must also be observed.

Other rituals such as the ablution purge and the wearing of wedding rings are also not allowed and all must comply with the security measures set by the National Security Council (MKN) and the Malaysian Ministry of Health (MOH) from time to time. when.

Only the dowry and related documents are allowed in the area that must be sanitized before and after the ceremony.

All parties involved must follow the date and time established by the Registrar or Assistant Registrar of Marriage and Divorce or the ceremony may be canceled if they are not present on that date and time.

According to the guidelines, the solemnization ceremony is only allowed for couples who have obtained marriage permission from JAWI, as well as their respective State Islamic religious departments.

This includes out-of-state couples who have obtained JAWI marriage permission and HIV test results are still valid when the solemnization ceremony takes place.

The marriage permission letter that has expired during the MCO period will be extended for two months from the date the approval ends, but the applicant must go to JAWI to extend the period.

There are also specific conditions set for the solemnization ceremony, including the parties involved who must first schedule an appointment with JAWI to obtain the date and time.

The parties involved in the ceremony should not consist of people who have symptoms, who have not had close contacts with people confirmed as positive for Covid-19, not under the Household Surveillance and Observation Order (HSO) and not the Control Order of Enhanced Movement (EMCO) areas.

The bride and groom and their guardians must also undergo a swab test prior to the ceremony.

“Negative test results must be sent to JAWI as evidence to allow the solemnization ceremony to take place,” the guidelines said.
