PORT DICKSON: A soldier is being investigated for the viral video showing a man in uniform allegedly abusing a foreign worker by rolling him on the ground, said Armed Forces Chief Gen. Affendi Buang.

Preliminary action has already been taken against the soldier implicated in the alleged abuse, he said.

Affendi stressed that soldiers on assignments were expected to act within the limits of the law.

“On the other hand, they fulfill their functions according to the instructions to maintain national and public security. We call on the community or those in quarantine to cooperate with the authorities, ”he said.

“The soldier may have acted a little over the edge, but it was an isolated case,” he told a news conference here today.

In the 19-second video, a man in military pants is seen, stick in hand, ordering the unidentified worker to roll on the ground. The incident is believed to have occurred in Klang, Selangor.

The foreigner, who is said to be a factory worker there, was allegedly being punished for violating a quarantine order.

In this regard, Affendi asked people to adhere to the standard operating procedures established by the government and not provoke the security personnel on duty.

Previously, Affendi officiated at the Dissolution and National Service Medal Parade for the Malaysian United Nations Peacekeeping Force Battalion 850-7 which has just returned from its mission in Lebanon.

The ceremony was held at the Army Basic Training Center here.
