(Reuters) – Manchester United needed a longer preseason to prepare for the Premier League campaign, but Saturday’s 4-1 win over Newcastle United is a sign they are firing at full throttle again, the manager said. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Red Devils rallied from an own goal by Luke Shaw to secure a comfortable win with late goals from Bruno Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford after captain Harry Maguire tied the game at 1-1.
Solskjaer was pleased with his team’s response to the 6-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur before the international break.
“After the last result, that made this game even bigger. Then we lost 1-0 in two minutes, that made it even more,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports.
“But we showed great stamina, great character to come back, we handled the backhand very well and were led by an inspiring captain.
“We don’t want to use it as an excuse, but we needed preseason. We wanted to get to this international break with more points than we have, but now we know that our season has started today, because we have reached the speed of the game.”
Manchester United’s second win of the season left them 14th with six points from four games. Solskjaer’s side will face Paris St Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday before a home clash with Chelsea in the Premier League.
“The boys have come together very well. They know we have a tough and difficult month ahead of us and they look forward to every game,” Solskjaer said.
