Soccer: Solskjaer can’t think of ‘next six games’ at Man United

(Reuters) – Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has welcomed the unequivocal support of the club’s hierarchy, but said he could never ignore the importance of short-term results at Old Trafford.

In a recent fan forum, United Executive Vice President Ed Woodward said Solskjaer’s team is making progress despite a turbulent start to the new season.

However, Solskjaer’s position came under scrutiny again after United’s 3-1 loss to Paris St Germain on Wednesday, which left their Champions League qualification hanging by a thread.

“From my experience, from my discussions with the club, we think long term,” Solskjaer told a news conference. “But in the short term, you can’t stop thinking about the next six games.

“It’s one of those seasons after a bump, after a loss, after a bad performance, you need to get back in shape. We will do the best we can as long as we can, hang on and keep moving on the table.”

United are ninth in the Premier League table, five points behind leaders Tottenham Hotspur, but one game behind.

David Moyes’ West Ham United host Manchester United at London Stadium on Saturday. Moyes was fired at Old Trafford after 10 months in 2014 despite having joined the club on a six-year contract.

Solskjaer accepts that he is now under pressure to succeed.

“You wouldn’t want it to be any different because that comes from the passion that our fans have, the passion that the media has for us, our history, our success and the hunger for success and the demands and standards that we have set,” he added.
