(Reuters) – Sam Allardyce is impressed by the way Juergen Klopp has added quality across the Liverpool squad, but says they need to keep winning trophies before they can be compared to the team that won the Manchester United treble in 1998- 99.

Allardyce was the last manager to win a Premier League match at Anfield when his Crystal Palace side prevailed 2-1 in April 2017. Now in command at West Bromwich Albion, Allardyce will have a chance to inflict another surprise defeat when his team faces the Premier. League champions later on Sunday.

“This Liverpool team ranks as high as you can get right now. Whether it’s as good as United’s triple team, some people will say yes,” Allardyce said according to the Daily Mail.

Alex Ferguson’s United won the league, the FA Cup and the Champions League in the 1998-99 campaign, becoming the first English team to do so.

“What this team has to do is win trophies for years to come. Then you can draw a more complete conclusion …”

Liverpool won the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup titles in 2019 and lifted their first English league crown in 30 years. They are once again leaders in the current campaign despite being hit by a series of injuries.

“What is remarkable is how well they are playing, even with their disabled list,” Allardyce added.

“I don’t think Juergen has experienced that before. The quantity and quality of the players he has left out is significant and the young people who have intervened have been magnificent.”

Allardyce, who lost his first game in charge 3-0 to Aston Villa, said West Brom had to get ahead early on at Anfield if they were to have any chance of achieving a result.

“We have to make sure we stop them. And stop them from the beginning,” he added.
