(Reuters) – Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he hopes to get his hands on the League Cup to serve as a springboard to win more trophies in the future as his team prepares for their quarterfinal match. final against Everton. .
United last won the League Cup in 2017 under former coach José Mourinho, while Solskjaer’s side was eliminated in the semi-finals last year by derby rivals and eventual winners Manchester City.
“We are desperate for a trophy, these players are desperate to learn how to win,” Solskjaer told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s game at Goodison Park.
“We want to improve each season and to improve last year is to reach the final and, of course, when you reach the final there is only one thing that matters and that is lifting the trophy.”
Solskjaer has yet to win any trophies since taking over Old Trafford and recalled how some of the club’s recent greats achieved success after lifting the League Cup for the first time in 2006.
“I remember winning my first trophy. Even towards the end of my career, I think it was Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic’s first trophy in the Carling Cup,” added Solskjaer.
“I think that was his first trophy and it gives something to a team.”
Solskjaer said midfielder Jesse Lingard will return to the team for the first time since September.
The 28-year-old has only appeared in the League Cup this season, missing other games as he was forced to isolate himself after coming into close contact with those who tested positive for COVID-19.
“He has been working hard in training. He has been unlucky enough to have to isolate himself a few times, have been in contact or be in close contact with COVID, not even have it himself,” Solskjaer said.
“He’s been very unlucky to be out of training camp a few times. He works really hard and will definitely be involved in the team on Wednesday.”
