Soccer: Soccer can be cruel, says Wolves’ Nuno after Man Utd scored late

(Reuters) – Young players at Wolverhampton Wanderers received a harsh lesson from Manchester United in Tuesday’s 1-0 loss, but experience will keep them in good stead, coach Nuno Espirito Santo said.

Amid a packed holiday schedule, Nuno made four changes to the team that drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, with four players aged 20 and under named to the starting lineup at Old Trafford.

The Wolves were denied a battle point in injury time when a left-handed shot from Marcus Rashford deflected from Romain Saiss and beat goalkeeper Rui Patricio at the near post.

“Soccer is a cruel game sometimes,” Nuno told reporters.

“The young players did well. It was the right time for these players. But the game teaches you to be focused until the last minute.

“It is a difficult lesson, but we will learn from it.”

Nuno said there was no point in insisting on defeat.

“This is football and it is a learning process. There is no point in feeling sorry for yourself.”

The loss left the Wolves 12th with 21 points from 16 games. They will then travel to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
