Soccer: Shaqiri’s future at Liverpool ‘looks promising’ – Klopp

(Reuters) – Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was impressed by Xherdan Shaqiri’s performance in Thursday’s 7-2 victory against Lincoln City in the League Cup and said his status at the Premier club League “looks promising.”

The Swiss international, who made his first start since last December’s Club World Cup, played in a slightly deeper midfield and opened the scoring in the ninth minute with an impressive free kick from the edge of the area.

Shaqiri, who joined Liverpool from Stoke City in 2018, has made just 42 appearances in all competitions, with injuries and one loss dropping him down the pecking order.

Adding Thiago to Liverpool’s already well-stocked midfield resources means Shaqiri will find playing time to be even more difficult to come by, but Klopp gave little indication that he exceeded the requirements.

“First of all, it was a super game; a super game in quite a position, I’m not sure, unknown. He did it very, very well,” Klopp said.

“… There is no question about the quality of Shaq, there was never any question and at the moment everything looks very, very good, it looks promising and we’ll see.”
