(Reuters) – Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played down an off-the-ball incident involving forward Edinson Cavani and Everton defender Yerry Mina in their 2-0 victory in the Cup quarter-final League at Goodison Park on Wednesday.
Cavani, who scored two minutes from time before Anthony Martial scored United’s second, received only a verbal warning from referee Bobby Madley after pushing Mina to the ground with his hands near the Colombian’s throat in the first half.
No further action was taken as the video assistant referee (VAR) is absent from the competition until the semifinals and Solskjaer said “there was nothing” even though television replays showed that Uruguayan Cavani was lucky to escape from The sanction.
“Two South Americans who have had some battles before, faced each other in the Copa América playoffs, so no, this was a proper soccer game,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports.
“With the fans, the tackles, the yellow cards and the chances at both ends, I enjoyed it … He (Cavani) is a great striker, the movement, the quality and the left foot was excellent.”
Everton coach Carlo Ancelotti said he did not discuss the matter with his players at the end of the game.
“The rules are that VAR does not happen in the game and therefore if the referee decides that Cavani did nothing wrong, then we have to accept this. Full stop,” Ancelotti said.
United will face local rival Manchester City in the semi-finals of the competition.
