(Reuters) – Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier believes his former club should receive the Premier League title even if the season is not completed due to the COVID-19 crisis.
Liverpool has a 25-point lead at the top with nine games to play in the Premier League, which has been on hold since March 9 as the new coronavirus spread worldwide.
According to Houllier, who brought Liverpool to the FA Cup and the glory of the UEFA Cup in 2001 during his six-year stint at Anfield, Juergen Klopp’s team would be deserved champion.
When asked if they should receive their first world-class title since 1990, the former France coach told TalkSport: “Yes. That’s what they did in France. They gave it to Paris St Germain. They had a 12-point lead. and I think Liverpool only needed two games to win the title.
“If there was a difference of maybe two or three points, then you could argue that it takes away some opportunities for the teams behind, but 25 points there is no way they are not champions. They deserve it.”
Houllier, now an advisor to the president of Olympique Lyonnais, Jean-Michel Aulas, added that the Premier League should follow the government’s example of whether it should resume.
“I think they should follow the government’s rules. If the government decides to stop doing it, then we have to comply with that,” he explained.
“Second, maybe I’ll wait a little bit because we don’t know what it will be like in fifteen days or three weeks.”
