Soccer: Liverpool reach the top and Firmino takes the last winner against Spurs

LIVERPOOL, England (Reuters) – Roberto Firmino led a winning goal in the 90th minute as Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield on Wednesday to open a three-point lead to the top of the Premier League table about the London club.

Liverpool have 28 points, while Spurs are now second with 25 points and both teams have played 13 games. Southampton and Leicester have 24 points.

Mohamed Salah had put Liverpool ahead before Son Heung-min leveled for Spurs in the 33rd minute, and although the hosts dominated, it was the visitors who had the best chances after the break.

But Firmino’s powerful header from a corner ensured the victory for Juergen Klopp’s team, leaving José Mourinho empty-handed, and the Spurs coach felt his team had deserved all three points.

“I told him (Klopp) that the best team lost and he didn’t agree, but that’s his opinion,” Mourinho said.

“So close to winning, but we lost opportunities, we had opportunities, we had the game under control, a draw would be a bad result, so you can imagine how we feel about a loss,” he said.

Klopp’s team dominated from the start and took the lead in the 26th minute when Salah’s shot deflected from Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld and into the far corner.

But Tottenham fought back seven minutes later, Giovani Lo Celso smashed through before finding Son with a superb pass and the South Korean defeated Alisson with a smart and serene shot.

Despite the home team enjoying the vast majority of possession, the Spurs had two great chances to move on with Steven Bergwijn bursting into the box and holding on to Trent Alexander-Arnold, but his shot hit the post.

Moments later, Harry Kane found himself unmarked from a Son corner, but unusually he made a mess with his header, driving the ball to the ground and off goal from a great position.

Such opportunities are rare at Anfield and the champions made the Spurs pay for the kill with Firmino jumping home a header from Andy Robertson’s corner.

“A good game against a counterattack monster, the possession we had we did incredibly well,” Klopp said.

“Yes they have scored a goal, they have had two chances, apart from that we control the game and they are massively deserved three points and I’m happy,” he added.
