(Reuters) – Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce praised goalkeeper Karl Darlow after his string of good saves helped win a 0-0 draw against champion Liverpool in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Darlow denied Mohamed Salah in the first half, turning the Egyptian’s post before clearing Roberto Firmino’s header. The 30-year-old made another excellent save in the 88th minute to avoid Firmino’s header.

Darlow has impressed after being brought into the team in place of the injured Martin Dubravka, keeping three clean sheets in the Premier League this season.

“He had to wait patiently for his opportunity and certainly with the way he trains every day, and Dubravka is now in shape, we needed our second goalkeeper to stay in shape and step up,” Bruce told reporters .

“We have had to draw on him too much at times, but there is no denying that he has been fantastic all season. He has done fantastically well and right now the jersey is his because of the saves he has made.”

Bruce said he would look to bring in reinforcements in the January window to help the side kick.

“We will go through the market. We have one or two things that we could make progress on, hopefully. And if it improves us, we will try to be in a position to act,” he said.

Newcastle, ranked 14th, will host third-place Leicester City on Sunday.
