BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Standard Liege has asked his former player and Belgian international Marouane Fellaini to invest money and help ensure the club’s survival while it is relegated to the ranks of fans, local media reported on Wednesday.

Fellaini, who started his career at the Belgian club before moving to the Premier League and now China, is asked to follow former Standard teammate Axel Witsel in a group of investors looking to buy the club’s stadium. and then rent it back to them, thereby increasing the cash they need to stay afloat.

Witsel has put 1.5 million euros ($ 1.63 million) in the project, according to reports.

Standard had its professional license revoked on April 8 after the Belgian football association discovered that they had not paid the premiums owed to the players and also questioned whether enough money had been raised to buy the stadium.

Standard, who finished third behind Arsenal and Eintracht Frankfurt in their Europa League group this season, has appealed the decision and the club said they were confident of proving their financial viability at the May 5 hearing.
